Human beings are born free and therefore deserve to enjoy and access unfettered access to their human rights. Human rights promotion and education should be the business of all. It is in this realm that the National Human Rights Commission of the Gambia visited the Gambia Revenue Authority on Monday 5th December 2026 as part of their efforts to strengthen the promotion of human rights among the security institutions in the country which by extension requires the establishment of Human Rights Units within these institutions. As employers and also service providers institutions have both an in-house mandate to ensure that the rights off their workers are highly maintained while on the other hand that customers’ and clients’ rights are equally respected in accordance with the law.
The NHRC delegation was represented by Executive Director Dr. Gassama, Commissioners Njundu Drammeh, Dibba, Director Legal Mr. Bah, Mam Ndeban Jobe, Director of Programs, among others. The GRA team that received the delegation was headed by the Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe, Commissioner of Customs Alagi K. Mbye, other representatives from Top and Senior Management. The meeting concluded with both sides expressing their satisfaction on the discussions and GRA agreeing to working with the NHRC on the modalities of strengthening its Internal Affairs Unit with an additional mandate of human rights. It is noteworthy to state that GRA has viable internal regulations, structures and tools that serves as checks and balances in its operations and with additional support from NHRC, its reputation can only get better.
